Personal information

John Henry Vernon Webb joined the Royal Navy as an Artificer Apprentice at the age of 16 on 8 Nov, 1939. In June 1943 he was sent to Plymouth (HMS Drake) from training at MTE Rosyth and joined HMS Hardy as Engine Room Artificer 5th Class (Fitter & Turner) on 8 Sep, 1943. He survived the sinking and later served on various ships (HMS Tavy, HMS Devonshire, HMS Camperdown, HMS Venerable, HMS Sultan, HMS Bonaventure (passage), HMS Adamant and HMS Oppossum) and from 1949 until April 1954 on motor torpedo boats HMS Hornet and HMS MTB-1032, although he was also on HMS Vanguard from August 1950 to April 1951. His last rank was Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class (Chief Petty Officer) since July 1951.
