Personal information
Llewellyn Halliwell was originally a miner in South Wales before joining the Merchant Navy. On 22 May 1941, he began to serve aboard the Calabria and survived her sinking one month later. The chief officer later remarked that his conduct while in the lifeboat was recommendably. Despite this grim experience, he continued to serve in the Merchant Navy for many years till his retirement. He led a full and active life.
