Personal information
The crew was taken of the stricken ship by a Canadian corvette. Its captain then asked for volunteers to return to the torpedoed ship. Chief Officer Houghton and the Second Engineer returned and ascertained ship could possibly survive. Skeleton crew boarded and vessel proceeded towards Canada. Bad weather when vessel was some 600 miles from Canada caused vessel to commence breaking up. Vessel was abandoned and crew picked up by corvette Dauphin. Empire Rainbow was sunk by by gun fire from HMCS Dauphin (information taken from Houghton's diary).
