Personal information
Francis James Dawson of Newcastle-upon-Tyne had already served in the RN during the First World War. He survived the sinking of HMS Edinburgh and later donated a White Ensign he had "borrowed" from the ship to the Admiralty which was apparently on display on present destroyer HMS Edinburgh. He also served on HMS Inglefield during the Second World War.
