Personal information
Cornelius F. O’Connor and Raymond Smithson were picked up for questioning by U-502 after the sinking of M.F. Elliott and stayed aboard when it had to dive when an aircraft appeared. The U-boat surfaced after three hours and the Germans placed the men in a dinghy, provided them with water, food and the direction to reach the nearest coast. They were rescued five days later by the Santa Maria and landed at Santos.
Time Magazine published an interview with Cornelius F. O’Connor in August 1942 in the article Death and Bombast (external link).
