Personal information
John Donovan joined the Royal Navy in September 1938, was trained at HMS Wildfire, a shore establishment at Sheerness and became a close range gunner at the pom-pom anti-aircraft gun aboard HMS Springbank. He was taken off by HMS Jasmine after the fighter catapult ship was torpedoed, but due to the high seas misjudged his leap from the ship to the corvette, resulting in serious damage to his leg. After spending about 15 months in hospital, he was honorably discharged from service.
