Personal information

Award Citation as published in November 1944:

For meritorious achievement as Commanding Officer of the USS Yukon during and following an attack on his ship by an enemy submarine.

Lieutenant Commander Albert L. McMullan commanded the USS Yukon when she was attacked in North Atlantic waters by an enemy submarine. Despite skillful handling and maneuvering of the USS Yukon one of a spread of at least four torpedoes struck the ship and caused extensive damage. On being hit by the torpedo, Lieutenant Commander McMullan instituted immediate and effective countermeasures by which the extensive damage was kept under control and stability retained. His superior skill and seamanship during the ensuing period saved the ship and her valuable cargo end enabled the damaged vessel to reach port unaided.

Lieutenant Commander Albert L. McMullan's outstanding performance of duty in bringing his damaged ship safely to port reflects great credit upon the United States Naval Service.
