Benjamin Oscar Wilmer was one of the 15 survivors from John D. Gill who were picked up by Robert H. Colley. He became Third Mate on the ship which had rescued him, but was lost when the tanker broke in two and sank in very bad weather in the North Atlantic on 4 October 1942.
