Son of Arvid and Thora Gustavsen, of Lystad, Vestfold. When U-130 (Kals) had torpedoed the Mirlo and approached the survivors in life boats they took the Master Olav Reinertsen onboard for questioning. Reinertsen asked for permission from Kals to reboard the ship and search for the seriously wounded ordinary seaman Sverre Gustavsen and he very generously agreed. After Gustavsen had been recovered the U-boat commander apologized for sinking the ship and handed some first aid items to the master and allowed him to return to his crew in the lifeboats.
