Harold Wilson Downes had joined the Empire Dryden in Sunderland on 18 February 1942. Following the torpedoing by U-572, he managed to get into the lifeboat in charge of the chief officer. According to his daughter he was torpedoed several times and in fact had the reputation as a “Jonah” and was forced to return to England on a ship where no one spoke English!
