Personal information
He was one of the 22 survivors in the lifeboat that reached Dakar after the sinking of Memnon and was interned by the Vichy French authorities. He escaped with two others in April 1941 and tried to reach British territory by following the river Niger, but they were caught near the border and held in captivity until being released on 29 May 1941.
