Personal information
Charles Levis Eric Murphy was born in Barbados and moved to the USA at age 14. He was severely injured when USS Donnell was torpedoed, transferred to USS Reeves on 6 May 1944 and taken to the USN hospital at Crevagh, Northern Ireland. Charles almost lost both his legs and he was convinced that if he didn't demand an American doctor after being taken to a hospital, the British doctors would have amputated his legs. He continued to serve in the US Navy after recovery, being assigned to USS Muliphen (AKA 61), USS Spokane (CL 120) and USS Shangri-La (CVA 38).
