Personal information
Son of Allen Williams and Camilla Lane, of Ipsden, Oxfordshire. He served aboard HMS Springbank together with his brother John Lane. Both survived the sinking, but John later lost his life when HMS Avenger was sunk in November 1942.
Together with their elder brother Allen the brothers had founded Penguin Books in 1935. Richard continued to work as publisher and emigrated to Australia after the war.
