Jan Leendert Boltersdorf broke his leg when Crijnssen was torpedoed and lay helpless on deck. Jan Schuurman saved his life by carrying him to a lifeboat and repeated this deed three days later, when Lebore was sunk. Schuurman was awarded the Kruis van Verdienste for his actions.
