Albert Edward Wears survived being blown up eight times at sea - either by mine or torpedo - during his long career at sea that began by joining the RNR in 1913 and continued in the Merchant Navy after the First World War. He survived the sinking of the British steam merchant Gardenia after being mined off Cromer on 12 March 1940.
