Son of James Thomas and Lillie Belle Malby, of Blanchard, WA. He joined the US Navy on 25 July 1942 and was injured in the sinking of James B. Stephens. His brother Robert Lee Malby joined the US Army Air Force on 11 January 1943 and was killed in action as flight engineer (T/Sgt) when the B-24J-5-FO (42-51542) Liberator aircraft of 738th BS, 454th BG, 15th AAF was shot down by anti-aircraft fire over Baden, Austria on 7 October 1944.
