Personal information
Albert Benson began his career in the Merchant Navy aboard Dwinsk that was sunk in the First World War. In the Second World War he served aboard Koranton and it appears that his younger brother James Walton Benson relieved him in Philadelphia on 5 September 1940 and perished when this ship was sunk with all hands six months later. Albert later joined the Deucalion which was bombed whilst in the convoy to Malta during Operation Pedestal in August 1942. After surviving the sinking of his next ship, the Empire Star, he was discharged from the Merchant Navy as he was physically unfit for further service at sea.
