Børge Iisager had been a cadet aboard the square-rigged training ship Danmark which was on a visit to the United States when Denmark was invaded by Germany in April 1940. The ship remained in Jacksonville, Florida until she was transferred to the US Government in December 1941 and became a cadet training ship for the US Coast Guard Academy. Børge served in the US Merchant Marine from 16 February 1942 to 15 August 1945 and stayed in Jacksonville after he married Ruby May Baacke there in 1944.
