Son of William James and Rachael Elizabeth Buchanan, of Sharon Hill, PA. William James Buchanan served in the US Army from 7 September 1917 to 5 May 1919 and was sent to France as Wagoner with HQ Company, 109th Machine Gun Battalion, 28th Division. He participated in the Battle of Château-Thierry and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and returned from the war with lungs damaged in a gas attack, an injury that would eventually led to his death due to pulmonary fibrosis in May 1953.
