Personal information
William Edward Bennett had served in the South Atlantic and Africa before being transferred to HMS Hardy and participating in the Arctic Convoys based in Scapa Flow. He survived the sinking of the destroyer and was picked up by a Canadian escort ship. William was then assigned to HMS Albatross supporting the Normandy landings until the repair ship was torpedoed on 11 August 1944, most likely by a long range torpedo fired into the Seine Bay by German motor torpedo boats. He was trapped below deck and then spent time in a hospital in France.
