Notes on event

At 16.27 hours on 29 Sep 1944, U-310 fired FAT torpedoes at convoy RA-60 off the North Cape and hit two ships, the Edward H. Crockett and Samsuva.

The Edward H. Crockett (Master Albert Baldi) in station #102 was struck by one torpedo on the starboard side forward of the #4 hatch. The explosion broke the shaft, wrecked the engine, damaged the forward bulkhead of the hold and killed the first assistant engineer. The crew of eight officers, 33 men and 27 armed guards (the ship was armed with one 5in, one 3in and eight 20mm guns) abandoned ship in four lifeboats after one hour and were picked up by the British rescue ship Zamalek and landed at the Clyde, Scotland on 5 October. The wreck was later scuttled by HMS Milne (G 14) with gunfire.
