Between 20.58 and 21.04 hours on 18 Oct 1940, U-46 fired four single torpedoes at convoy SC-7 about 100 miles west by south of Barra Head and claimed two ships totalling 8000 grt sunk and one ship with 7000 grt damaged. The U-boat is credited with sinking the Beatus and Convallaria in this attack.
The master and 36 crew members from the Beatus (Master Wilfred Leslie Brett) were picked up by HMS Bluebell (K 80) (LtCdr Robert E. Sherwood) and landed at Gourock.
