| Notes on event | At 04.03 hours on 1 April 1942 the unescorted Eastmoor (Master James Basil Rodgers) was hit aft by one torpedo from U-71 and sank after twelve minutes about 600 miles east of Hampton Roads. The ship had been spotted about 90 minutes earlier and missed with the first two torpedoes at 03.03 and 03.31 hours. The master, 12 crew members and three gunners were lost. 29 crew members and seven gunners were picked up by the British steam merchant Calgary and landed at Capetown. | ||
