At 04.10 hours on 9 June 1942, FFL Mimosa (K 11) (Cdr R.R.L. Birot, FFN) was hit on port side amidships by one of two torpedoes fired by U-124 while escorting convoy ONS-100 on its starboard quarter about 600 miles southeast of Cape Farewell. The torpedo struck near the engine room and the flooding caused the boilers to explode shortly thereafter. The corvette sank by the stern within three minutes with most of the survivors being killed by the detonations of the depth charges as there had been no time to secure them. Her loss wasn’t noticed by the other escorts until dawn, but HMCS Assiniboine (I 18) (LtCdr J.H. Stubbs, RCN) then turned back to investigate and rescued four men from a raft. The commander, 60 French sailors and six British sailors, including the liaison officer were lost.

The majority of the French sailors that went down with this ship came from the same small community of St. Pierre et Miquelon. The loss of so many of the young men had lasting effects on that community.
