Notes on event | At 23.35 hours on 24 September 1942 U-561 sank the Sphinx with 22 rounds of gunfire about 36 miles northwest of Tyre, Lebanon. The crew abandoned ship in a boat and landed at Sidon the next day. The U-boat had already sunk an unknown topsail schooner at 00.02 hours on 21 September with 29 rounds of gunfire northwest of Latakia after a torpedo had missed at 23.51 hours. |
