Notes on event

At 10.15 hours on 28 Feb 1945 the unescorted Soreldoc (Master John W. Hamilton) was hit by one torpedo from U-775 south of Barsey Island in the St.Georges Channel. The ship was struck on the port side amidships and broke in two. The fore part listed to port and sank within 30 seconds, while the after section remained on even keel and sank after four minutes. The 29 crew members, six armed guards and one passenger (US Army security officer) had no time to launch the lifeboats and had to jump overboard. The master and 14 crew members were lost. After one hour in the water, the survivors were picked up by the fishing boat Loyal Star and landed at Milford Haven at 17.45 hours.
