Notes on event | At 00.23 hours on 1 August 1942 the unescorted Krest’janin (Master A.G. Nikolaev) was hit by one torpedo from U-601 and sank within three minutes 10 miles west of Mezhdysharskiy Island. The survivors abandoned ship in two lifeboats and were questioned by the Germans who gave them the direction to the shore. They made landfall at Belushya Guba, Novaya Zemlya. 5 crew members and two passengers were lost. | ||
