At 04.57 hours on 19 June 1940 the unescorted The Monarch (Master John McNeill) was hit in the stern by a G7a torpedo from U-52 and sank within 4 minutes 60 miles west of Belle Ile in the Bay of Biscay. The master and eleven crew members were lost.
