Individual cutters and units of the United States Coast Guard were assigned to the Navy beginning in the spring of 1941. On 1 November 1941 the remainder of the Coast Guard was ordered to operate as part of the Navy.
During the Second World War some United States Navy ships were manned by a United States Coast Guard crew.
All United States Coast Guard ships returned to the Treasury Department on 1 January 1946.
