HMS H 28 was the only submarine to have carried out offensive war Patrols in both World War 1 and World War 2. Two Italian submarines and two American submarines also served in both World War 1 and World War 2, but did not carry out offensive patrols in both wars. (1)

HMS H 28 (Lt. D.E. Mansfield, RN) conducted A/S exercises off Plymouth with HMS Volunteer (Lt.Cdr. H. Gartside-Tippinge, RN). Later the same day she departed Plymouth for Portland. She made that passage together with HMS Trident. (Cdr. J.G. Gould, RN). The submarines were escorted by HMS Shikari (Cdr. J.H. Lewis, RN). (2)

HMS H 28 (Lt. E.A. Woodward, RN), HMS H 44 (Lt. E.D. Norman, RN), HMS H 49 (Lt. M.A. Langley, RN) and HMS H 50 (Lt. A.R. Cheyne, RN) shifted from Portland to Portsmouth. They were escorted by HMS Shemara (Cdr.(Retd. H. Buckle, RN).

Later the same day all four submarines departed Portsmouth again for patrol in the North Sea. They were escorted until 1700/11 by HMS Foxglove (Lt.Cdr. T.I.S. Bell, RN). (6)

At 1400 hours, HMS H 28 (Lt. E.A. Woodward, RN) joined HMS H 44 (Lt. E.D. Norman, RN) and their escort HMS Warrior II (Capt.(Retd.) A.E. Johnston, RN) off South Foreland. The two submarines and their escort then proceeded to Portsmouth where they arrived at 0530/19. (6)

HMS H 28 (Lt. E.A. Woodward, RN) departed Portland for her 2nd war patrol. She is ordered to patrol in the English Channel.

She departed Portland together with HMS H 44 (Lt. E.D. Norman, RN), HMS H 49 (Lt. M.A. Langley, RN) and HMS H 50 (Lt. A.R. Cheyne, RN). They made rendez vous with HMS Warrior II (Capt.(Retd.) A.E. Johnston, RN) at 2030/29 which escorted them until 0345/30 when the submarines proceeded to their patrol areas.

HMS H 28 (Lt. M.R.G. Wingfield, RN) attacked an enemy transport in a convoy off Texel in position 53°11'N, 04°40'E. Two torpedoes were fired but no hits were obtained.

The convoy attacked was made up of the German Meise (821 GRT, built 1918) and Dutch (in German service) Nijenburgh (399 GRT, built 1939). They were escorted by the auxiliary submarine chasers UJ-A, UJ-C and UJ-F. UJ C reported being missed astern by one torpedo by a margin of about 10 meters.

1700 hours - Sighted an enemy convoy. Commenced attack.

1705 hours - Fired two torpedoes against an enemy transport from 3000 yards. No hits were obtained. It is thought the torpedoes missed astern due to the speed being underestimated. A hunt for the submarine was now started in which three depth charges were dropped but these did no damage. (7)

HMS H 28 (Lt. M.R.G. Wingfield, RN) ended her 7th war patrol at Harwich.

Earlier that day, at 0805 hours, H 28 was machine gunned by a German Heinkel 111 aircraft in position 52°12'N, 02°04'E. H 28 sustained no damage. (7)
