The Boat

By Buchheim, Lothar-Günther
1999, Orion Military
ISBN 0304352314
Paperback, 563 pages

Descripton: This well-known novel, stemming from the author's experiences as a war correspondent on U-96, describes a single U-boat patrol from beginning to end. The long periods of boredom punctuated by bursts of tension and excitement typical of a U-boat patrol are described from the correspondent-narrator's point of view. This novel was the basis for the famous movie of the same title.

The American edition, translated by Denver and Helen Lindley, was first published by Knopf in 1975. The British edition, translated by J. Maxwell Brownjohn, was originally published by Collins in 1974.

The recently republished edition appears to be a reprint of the Lindley translation.
