There is a very interesting artical on modifying the type 7 u-99 into the u-203 in the magazine SCALE SHIP MODELER Jan/Feb 1987mVol.10 No.1, this is a great ALL submarine issue, a must have if you are into R/C subs !!! I made the NICHIMO into a moderized version . I used 2 very small motors that I had from some old project ( I think you can find them in RADIO SHACK still ), 2 pieces of wire for the prop shafts , 2 pieces of wire insulation that I used for the motor/shaft couplings and I even used the plastic props from the kit ! I offset the motors in the hull and used blue house insulation foam sheets to make the boat near neutral bouyancy and 2 penlite batteries as power. The academy is just too ugly and out of proportion to make a nice looking model, more room to do things motorized wise ,but an eye sore to me. I build R/C model subs ( only German u-boats ! ) so making modifications and cutting boats in two and making them larger etc. is not a problem for me, even for an advanced model maker the academy would be a major pain in the butt !!
