Hi Dougie,

The saddle tank vents actually function to allow the air to escape which facillitates the dive of the Type VII U-boat. There are lower Tide Valves that open to allow the sea water to flood the tank. I did a brief article in the Subcommittee SRJ about the Type VIIC Ballast Systen, issue #60 March 2005.
