Hi Rainer,

Thanks for the photo. After all this discussion, I did find the dive tank vent valves in David Westwood's book "Anatomy of a Shop: The Type VII U-Boat" on page 60 and 61. He locates the vents for D1, D2 (pair), D4 (pair), And D5. I still haven't located the vent under the Wintergarden for the Main Ballast Tank D3.

The raised area with a plate cover in the center of your photo in back of the tower has something to do with the two vent valves on the port side. The book indicates there is an internal pipe from that unit to both port vent valves (D2 and D4). Of course, the starboard side is exactly the same.

Do you know if these valves are operated with oil hydraulics or high pressure air?
