Hello Everyone,

The S-51 was one ( or was) the last S boat built by the U.S. All of the S boats were antiques by the time WWII started. It would have been a very scary proposition taking one of these to war (although some very brave souls did). The Fleet boats were totally different and at least a decade newer in design and vintage. I believe you are correct though that earlier submarines had both vents at the bottom and the top of the ballast tanks hence; Kingston valves. On the Subs produced right before and after (to my knowledge) only have the valves on top of the ballast tanks as the lower ones were redundant. Rick
