Thanks for the replies Ger and Ken. Your description of the plight of U-126 makes me wonder how many u-boat crews in similar straits heard the last of their compressed air hissing out of the tanks without any response of the depth gauge needle. While there are no descriptions of death on a u-boat that sound anything but horrible, I would think the slow death of being suspended in the depths without the ability to surface would be particularly tortuous.
