Hi and thanks for this.
What I am unsure about is that one of the earliest observants of the effects of high pressure on people was that people could be subjected to atmospheric pressures of two atmospheres and go back to normal pressure with no ill effect. The main disadvantage that I can see would be that the sailors would be consuming twice as much air as normal.
Say a commander of a submarine wanted the ability to go deeper for a limited period of time. Say he wanted to go under a mine field. This would be a quick immediate solution that could be done on any existing submarine. Why was this not done?
