As Rainer indicated, there wasn\'t (apparently) any fixed drill on this.

I have KTB for U-163, and there are instances when the Commander fired a \"Fächer\" (fan-shot) with the stern tubes just because the situation demanded this. For example, on one occasion he found himself in the middle of a convoy forming up; two steamers suddenly appear heading towards his stern, at fairly close range, so he lets loose with a 2-er Fächer from the stern tubes...
