Hi Derek,
Actually the fixed fwd hydroplanes of German boats usually took a teriffic beating in anything but the smoothest surface ops. For that reason shafts and surrounding supports etc. were overdimensioned for extra strength. They regularly came out of the water and slammed down again. Thus your point 4 is wrong. The Cdr. also had to be a little more careful when docking the boat. They also were handy as a \"can-opener\" as the USCG Cutter Hamilton will attest to. :-))) Rgds, RB
