Hi all,
If I\'m not mistaken, both the Types VII and IX used a type of stationary leading edge guard mounted in front of the dive planes. It would seem that these protected the dive planes from damage or fouling if they encountered an obstacle. Since the U.S. subs didn\'t use these, I wonder if they were mainly to protect the u-boat\'s planes during docking operations (during which U.S. subs had their dive planes retracted). Maybe they weren\'t necessary at all (except for can opener maneuvers)?
Regards,
Tom
