If you want to get technical, the US authorised use of the metric system during the Jefferson administration, so from a legislative standpoint, it\'s the only system that was ever specifically permitted. It just wasn\'t very popular. Too \"French,\" probably. And we were already using feet and inches, so despite making the use of metric measurements legal, no one bothered to use them in ordinary life.

I suspect most Americans wouldn\'t have that much trouble with metrics if you divorced the Celcius temperatures, which were never really a part of the system to begin with. It\'s perhaps a bit like a small child, wondering why anyone would ever take the trouble to speak (pick a language) when they\'d obviously have to translate it into English in their heads in order to actually understand it. \"That which the individual can\'t understand is obviously wrong.\"
