US metrication

The US weights and measures situation is interesting in that both the Metric and avoirdupois systems are legal, but the Metric system was never adopted by the population for general use. The last serious attempt to get the US Metric across the board was made during the Carter administration (1977-1980), but the project was immediately squashed by the Reagan administration. The end result was \"soft metrication\" in which metric measures are printed on all consumer articles, but the sizes are still avoirdupois.
It is also interesting that American scientists measure Metric (MKS)and engineers typically measure f-lb-s (avoirdupois).
BTW, Britain and much of the ex-British empire have retrained miles as a measure of distance, but have gone to Metric weights and volumes, however, they still weigh people in stone.
