That is what I remember. The English dubbing is actually very good, but nothing beats the original for feel. Even perfect dubbing never has a fully natural feel to it.
I have seen some foreign films (and TV channels) where the stereo tracks are used for bilingual soundtracks: English on the left track, and Japanese on the right track, for example. Special VCR\'s can select and playback whichever language you prefer from the same tape. This is quite common in Japan, but it wasn\'t done with Das Boot as far as I know.
