Red lighting

Some planes use adjustable weak white lights similar to many car dashboards. The trick being to turn the light so low that you can just see what the instruments are telling you. The key point is the intensity of the light, not the color. However, red light and red goggles were the only practical way to do it in a WWII submarine.
