It's a motor-generator set, not an electro engine. The nameplates indicate German/Austrian manufacture. It could be from a submarine, or have been intended for one. Someone with the proper references might be able to check the numbers on the generator's spec plate and find where it was used. They appear to be clear enough to read.

In the US, such a set could conceivably have come from a diesel-electric locomotive. Trains and submarines used the same engines.
