You'd probably get rid of the heat into the water. My references are mostly to US boats, which also had DC generators, which is another reason I tended to agree this thing probably came from a train or emergency generator.
On US boats, at least, both the generators and the motors were water cooled, with a lot of narrow heat-exchanger tubes wrapped around them. Electricity can coexist with water as long as you're careful to keep them from actually touching each other.
