Single transducer

A single transducer (sensor) obviously can not perform as well as an array of 48 sensors. I am just surprised the Americans did not use arrays. I would be even more surprised to find the British did not use them. Was there no technology transfer, or were the Americans by then so dependent on radar and code breaking that they did not bother with sophisticated sonar?
Anyway, the XXI would have been quite devastating if it had used its sonar to find targets and forgotten about wolf packs and all that radio chit chat. To paraphrase as an ex-ASW guy from another forum, the first sign of an XXI would have been a "flaming datum".
