U 570

U 570 was captured in August 1941, so it carried the old German sonar, the U-shaped 11 sensor GHG on each side of the bow. The much improved circular 48 sensor balcony GHG was not developed until 1943.

I had not realized US/UK passive sonar was as primitive as you say. It sound like they were pretty deaf without active sonar. This means XXI style electroboats would really have cleaned up if they had appeared a few years earlier and moved the U-boat war underwater full time. They would have been carrying all kinds of sonar based goodies, both passive and active, like the torpedo warning device TAG/NHG, the fire control sonar "Niebelung" and the mine detection system MINUR plus improved GHG.
