T-valve snorkel

The T-valve snorkel was experimental at the end of the war. It was by far the best design and variants are still used today.

According to Rössler, U-143, 145, 149 and 150, all type II D, were equipped with T-valve snorkels in March/April 1945. He says nothing about T-valve snorkels on Type VII or XVII, although once the trials on the type II were successful, it is obvious the technology would have been expanded to the other types.

The first design was a ring valve which got beaten up by the waves and became unserviceable. The next design, the ball valve was used for about a year, but it had disadvantages, especially its large size and height above the water and its constant closing even for small waves. The T-valve was the ideal design, small, close to the surface and its opening and closing could be independently controlled (not on original version).
