Hi, Kasimo and Others!
Axle is the correct spelling. The main point I would like to make is that Lignum Vitae is used because of it's self-lubricating properties, particularly on the A-frame shaft supports outside the pressure hull, immediately in front of the propellers. This means that there doesn't have to be an extra greasing system for this external part, which would involve more pipes and therefore holes in the pressure hull.
